Project Descript:

Situated in rural Walpole, New Hampshire, the concept for this project is to transform a historical barn built in 1897 into an art retreat that stimulates the mind, body and soul creatively, socially and physically. Ideal for a full day or weekend retreat, the program provides a wide range of activities in a number of multi-purpose spaces: open art studios; multi-purpose gallery/theatre/cinema; atrium/bridge lounges; private spa; dining/café facilities; and accommodations.

The building is designed to be sustainable with minimal impact on the environment. It is intended to inspire the creative sense as well as develop a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. The Bridge, originally used to bring horses in to the 3rd level of the barn, is enclosed and converted into a Lounge allows for this connection to nature. The overall post and beam style of the Arts and Crafts movement also lends itself to an overall rustic experience while the glass elements of the atrium and balcony railings add a modern and crispness to the retreat.
